WHOLE TOWN HAD NARROW ESCAPE FROM BEING WIPED OUT.
INSURANCE $2,200 -- ORIGIN OF FIRE A MYSTERY.
The village of Amelith, nine miles soutwest of West Bay City, was visited by fire late Thursday night and the cheese factory, postoffice and general merchandise store were totally destroyed. The loss on the buildings and contents is $5,000; insurance, $2,200, in the Frankenmuth Mutual insurance company.
The fire broke out at 11 o’clock and raged for over an hour. On account of there being no water facilities in the village it was impossible to check the flames. The villagers consider it was very fortunate that there was no wind at the time or the entire town would have been wiped out. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
Amelith is a little town of 500 population in Frankenlust township. It has one church and a cheese factory . The postmaster and owner of the factory is John Berger. The village is not on any railroad and consequently it was impossible to send assistance from this city although the reflection of the fire was plainly visible for over an hour.
