GOTTLIEB KEMPTER, Old Fireman, Dies _______
Was On Bay City Department 38 Years; Retired in 1906.
Gottlieb F. Kempter, who joined the Portsmouth fire department when a boy 13 years old and who served with the Bay City fire department for 38 years until his retirement in 1906, died Monday at 6:35 a.m. at his home 813 Webster street, after a long illness. Mr. Kempter was the first member of the local fire department to be placed on the pension list.
Born in Portsmouth on June 21, 1855 Mr. Kempter when still a lad started fighting fires. His first job was with the Alert fire combine company under Chief Robert J. Campbell. In 1871 when the Night Hawk company was formed in Bay City proper he became associated with this organization and three years later when it was reorganized he was made captain of the company. In 1881 he was named assistant chief of the fire department under Chief Thomas K. Harding. During his long service with the fire department he fought practically every large conflagration in the city. At one time he was sent with the Alert fire engine to St. Helens Lake and remained ther for two weeks until a forest fire was extinguished .
Mr. Kempter was a life member of Portsmouth Lodge No.190 F. & A. M. having joined the lodge in 1885.
Surviving are two sonsR.J. Kempter of this city and Albert F. and two brothersFred F. and Edward F. both of Olympia, Wash.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the residence with the Rev. W. J. Dudgeon officiating. Burial will in Elm Lawn Cemetery.

Parents: Gottlieb Kempter (1840-1902), married Fredericka Arnold (1825-1887). There children were: Louisa (b. 1850 in Germany), Gottlieb (b. 1885), Anna (b. June 4, 1858), Johanna Fredereick (b. 1860) and Ferdinand (b. 1864). The senior Gottlieb served in the Civil War with the 29th Mich. Infantry, and is buried at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Bay City, MI.
