Has Resided In Bay City For
Past 40 years: Born In N.Y. State

Joshua J. Royce 83 year old Civil war veteran and commander of U.S. Grant post of G.A.R. here , died this morning at 8:30 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Charles Thomas 246 North Lincoln avenue. Mr. Royce had been ill for about three weeks.

Born in New York State June 11,1845, Mr. Royce came to Bay City 40 years ago and has resided here since. He is survived by his daughter Mrs. Thomas and by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Albert Burgeson of this city.

Early in the Civil war Mr. Royce enlisted, and was assigned to Company I of the 93rd New York volunteers. He was captured by the rebels forces and incarcerated in the dreaded Andersonville prison. He took part in several of the important engagements of the war.

At the last election of the U.S. Grant post, Mr. Royce was chosen commander, but he was taken ill the week he was to be installed and died before he could receive that honor from his comrades.

The funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p. m. at the Thomas residence, with the Rev. Henry J. Simpson, formerly of Bay City and now of Flint, officiating. Mr. Royce will be buried in Soldiers Rest in Pine Ridge cemetery as taps are sounded in the simple last rites for a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
