Henry Schindehette (1840-1907)
Proprietor of the Republic Hotel in Bay City.

Was born in Germany, August 2, 1840. He came to Detroit, Mich., in 1857 and to Bay City in 1862. When the war broke out he enlisted in the Twenty-fourth Michigan Infantry. He was engaged in the battle of Gettysburgh, where he was wounded in the left hip. After remaining in hospital for eight months, he was mustered out of the service on account of his wound. In 1865 he returned to Bay City, where he has since engaged in the hotel business. Is now proprietor of the National Hotel, corner Fourth and Saginaw Streets.

Henry Schindehette, for many years deputy United States marshal here, served with the 24th Michigan Infantry, 1862-64, was wounded in the hip at Gettysburg, lay eight months in hospital, and to this day suffers from that injury.

  • Henry was born August 2, 1840 in Kassel Hesse, Germany, and immigrated to Detroit in 1857.
  • Henry succumbed to his wounds dying of tetanus in Bay City, MI on July 19th, 1907.
