History of Tuscola and Bay Counties, Michigan - 1883
Justin Wentworth, the subject of this sketch, is a native of Hope, Knox County, Me., and was born in 1835. He remained there until twenty-one years of age when he came to Vassar, from Detroit, in company with eight or ten others, he took the old state route via Flint, Pine Run and Tuscola, stopping at the latter place over night, at a hotel then kept by Dr. Johnson. He first engaged with Merrill & Remick, lumbermen, on Goodwin Creek, and helped to clean out that water course on which they erected two dams. Samuel Sayres was the foreman. After four years service with Merrill & Remick he purchased a farm in the township of Watertown, and engaged in farming, where he remained four years, at the end of which time he removed to Vassar, and a year later purchased his present farm where he has since resided, with the exception of seven months spent in Minnesota. Mr. Wentworth, in connection with D. G. Slafter, Mr. Dacey and Mr. Watrous cleaned out White Creek and built a dam at its head. He has been largely identified with the lumbering interests of the county, and at present is lumbering on Rife River, Muskegon River and the Mackinaw Division of the Michigan Central Railroad.

A few years after coming to Michigan from Maine, Mr. Wentworth engaged in lumbering with John Dacey under the firm name of Dacey & Wentworth, this concern continued until 1868 when it was dissolved, and he formed a parnership with his brother, George K. Wentworth, and the firm J. & G. K. Wenworth has since existed. They had headquarters at Vassar until 1879, when they opened an office in Bay City.
The firm until 1899 logged extensively in northern Michigan, principally north of Bay City along the Mackinaw division of the Michigan Central Railroad, and while never owning a sawmill, had logs sawed under contract for then at various mills in Bay City, Muskegon, Menominee and Otseqo Lake, and for a period of five years operateded extensively at Rhinelander, Wisconsin. They later invested in Minnesota pine timber lands, and the Johnson-Wenworth Company of Cloquet, Minnesota was formed to build a sawmill to manufacture this and other timber. Later selling their Minnesota interests they transferred their activities to the Pacific coast, where their interests are now represented by the Portland Lumber Company of Portland, Oregon.
Mr. Wentworth was president of the German-American Sugar Company, Vice-president of the Bay City bank, and president of the Bank of Vassar. He was also a member of the various clubs in Bay City.
