Cemeteries
During early settlements burials often took place on the land where a family lived. As settlements grew, land would be set aside for a group burial grounds. This first burial sites were sometimes changed to accomodate further growth requiring remains be moved to a more permanent site. The first burial recorded in Bay County was that of Mr. Bennett in 1840 on a Sandy ridge near Washington avenue known as 'Potter's Field'. It was abandoned in 1860 when Pine Ridge Cemetery opened at Ridge and Tuscola roads. The first county cemetery was Oak Ridge which opened in 1851-52.
