In 1789 the U.S. government establised the Federal Lighthouse Service.

Long ago ships were led to safe harbor by following a single light beaming a far distant lighthouse. Modern navigation methods have replaced the essential need of the old lighthouses of which there are many still standing. However, most are badly in need of repair if they are to survived as maritime relics to be treasured by future generations.
