Caris Red Lion Coney Sauce!

Remember the great coney dogs served up by the former Caris Red Lion restaurant in Bay City?
Now bring those memories alive by making your own Red Lion coney dogs using their recipe!

Coney Sauce Recipe:

  • 3 lbs. beef grnd. 3 times.
  • 5 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 4 med. onions, chopped
  • 1-1/2 tsp garlic salt*
  • 7 drops Tabasco sauce
  • 1 lg. can tomato juice
  • 1 cup water

    Brown the ground beef then add remaining ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil then simmer until desired thickness is reached (about 2 hours). Freeze whatever is left over in small freezer bags for future use.

    Serving suggestions:
    Use Koegel hot dogs

    with skins. Slow cook them in a frying pan until they are slightly crisp to get that crunch sound when biting. Top your bunned hotdog with a generous layer of coney sauce, then a strip of mustard, some finely chopped onions, and a sliced dill pickle.
