Soldiers' Rest Monument.
The monument designed by the G.A. R. posts of this city to perpetuate the memory of the dead soldiers, has been placed in position in Pine Ridge cemetery. It is of Whitney granite resting on a base of the same material, and stands on a mound three feet high. On the sides of the monument are the following inscriptions:
“They saved their country
And fought for freedom.
They are quietly sleeping
Under the “Red, White and Blue”
“To preserve and strengthen those kind and fraternal feelings
which bind together the soldiers and sailors of the rebellion.”

After Judge Birney's death in 1888 his family continued ownership of the cemetery until 1900, when it was sold it to {George W. Ames}. In 1899 {Charles C. Cuthbert} became superintendent and sexton of the cemetery. After Birney died in 1931 Cuthbert continued his position at the cemetery until his death in 1952. Subsequently, the cemetery has been maintained at different times by various volunteer groups. {View additional history.}
-- In 1999 the Friends of Historical Pine Ridge Cemetery was created by Dave and Delores Rogers to form a coalition of volunteer citizens to preserve this burial grounds where many of the community's earlest pioneers and Civil War veterans rest. Thanks to the efforts volunteers and support from a number businesses, much of nature's overgrowth has finally been cleared away. However, a greater effort is now required to deal with damage done by nature and vandalism: Cracked Headstones, Tumbled blocks of Family Plots, Toppled Monuments, Sucken Markers, Pruning/Removal of Trees -- many in bad shape and in need of fixing. The best way to understand the need is to visit the cemetery and see for yourself.
